Amazon.com Product Description
From the renowned company that created the Swiss Army Knife more than a century ago comes the Hercules, a complete set of tools for campers, hikers, boy scouts, and just about everyone else. Measuring 4-3/8 inches long, the Hercules is stylishly cased in a timeless red housing with the familiar Victorinox logo on the side. More importantly, the unit contains more than a dozen stainless-steel and plastic tools appropriate for just about any occasion. The standard tools include a large locking blade, a can opener with a small screwdriver, a bottle opener with a large screwdriver and wire stripper, and a small set of scissors. That's just the beginning, however, as the Hercules also offers a reamer, a wood saw, small and large Phillips screwdrivers, pliers with a wire cutter and wire crimper, a toothpick, tweezers, a corkscrew, and a key ring. In short, there's no better accessory for camping, hunting, and fishing trips, along with general around-the-house tasks.

As with all Victorinox items, the Hercules is made to exacting standards, with dozens of individual parts and hundreds of steps going into its construction. Victorinox attends to every detail, from selecting the finest materials to performing the final inspection. In addition, each individual tool has been hardened in a different way to stand up to its designated use. Outfitted with a plastic housing, the Hercules carries a lifetime warranty.

About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

5 out of 5 stars the swiss masterpiece   August 2, 2010

I had many knives my entire life and I always wanted one that had many gadgets and one that gave me protection. I have about 4 swiss knives and one hunting knife. I would trade all of them for my new hercules swiss. It has all , no more than you could ever want from a knife. It is very useful and well crafted and it also makes you feel safe. I spent 2 weeks looking for a good swiss and found the hercules. I searched for the best price. The lowest I could find was $80. I was about to purchase it because I spent so long searching for the best price. But then I saw it on amazon for this cheap price. About $50 is the dream price. I amvery stisfied with my purchase and I love this brilliant knife.

4 out of 5 stars Para uso mas pesado   July 13, 2010

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased   April 22, 2010

As others have commented, the knife is a larger than it appears in the picture. At ~4.5" x 1.25" x 1.25" it's not insubstantial. Having owned many traditionally sized SAK's I made the conscious decision to try the larger size and am pleased.

In purchasing this knife I was also considering the work champ and am glad I decided against it. While I don't doubt the uses of the wood/metal file, the Hercules is a perfect workable thickness. Any larger and I imagine the blade would become harder to handle. With that said, those with small hands may still find the knife too thick.

The workmanship is flawless, the blade locking mechanism is smooth and easy to use, although there are rare moments when I wish the blade could be opened onehanded. I find the weight and size of the knife to be pocketable in casual dress but wouldn't try carrying it around in slack pockets.

It doesn't have the same number of tools as the SwissChamp or others, but the utility more than makes up for the omissions in my mind.

3 out of 5 stars Visually disappointing   December 4, 2009

I was anxious to get this knife, and was a little disappointed with its appearance. In lieu of the traditional bright red glossy cover is a dull, satin deep maroon vinyl-feeling cover. Had I realized this (and I thought I read the description), I would have foregone this purchase. It is still a very serviceable tool, but visually, it leaves much to be desired.

Bought this knife primarily for the locking blade but found myself using the other tools as well (pliers, scissors, etc.) It may be a bit bulky in the pocket but once you use it you'll realize that the longer blade and handle will make up for its bigger size when compared to the regular swiss knives.
